Four hundred and sixty-two watches. Two dial colors. One number line, one through four sixty-two.
Sounds simple until you actually have to decide who gets to be #1.
The obvious answer — number them straight through as they're built, black takes 1 through 231, blue takes 232 through 462 — solves the engraving problem. It doesn't solve the actual one. One color owns every low number in the run. The other doesn't get a single one. That's not a numbering scheme. That's picking a favorite.
Our manufacturer offered something better: keep the numbers sequential, but mix the dial colors as the watches get assembled — so a black dial could land on #12, or #400, and nobody would know which until it was built. Clever. Genuinely thoughtful. It also meant the number stopped meaning anything. A low serial is supposed to tell you something. If it's just whichever case happened to get built that morning, it doesn't.
What we landed on instead: each color gets its own complete run. BK001 through BK231 for black. BL001 through BL231 for blue. Two number ones. Two number two-hundred-and-thirty-ones. Neither color inherits the other's leftovers.
It's more work on the production side — more sorting, more verification, more chances to get it wrong before it gets engraved right. Our manufacturer said yes anyway.
Small detail. Nobody buying a watch is going to ask how we got here. But if you're holding BK047 or BL047, you're holding the 47th of your color, not the 47th of whatever was left. That's the whole point of a low number in the first place.
